Featured Business: Kirk’s Fly Shop, Grand Lake Colorado

A great logo contributed to one of the most colorful signs we’ve ever produced. With overall dimensions of 5′ x 6′, the two-sided, Kirk’s FlyShop sign required multiple layers of paint, all applied by hand, including the hand-carved,  hand-painted trout, and the raised, hand-carved letters. The background was custom-cut from plywood, and the trout and letters formed from high-density urethane. Because the sign was two-sided, every cut and paint stroke had to be applied twice, including the intricate border detail, a mountain scene illustration, and the fly and trout elements. It was a time-consuming endeavor requiring ample time for each layer of paint to dry before applying the next.

Hand-painted signs are in demand now because of their durability and attractive aesthetic: Instead of unwieldy, overlapping vinyl layers with harsh edges, hand-painting can achieve multiple, seamless layers, as well as colorful, intricate designs and artistic details.

Paxton Signs has produced signs for Kirk’s Fly Shops in Estes Park as well as this latest sign, above, for their store in Grand Lake, Colorado. They are a full-service fishing experience, both in gear selection and trip outings. Visit their website at, www.kirksflyshopgrandlake.com.

FEATURED BUSINESS: Wild Side Smoke Shop

The Wild Side Smoke Shop  wanted a retro look for their lighted storefront sign. We found “Hip Pocket,” a typeface that is both bold and 60’s retro. With a little font manipulation to improve readability, the design was ready for production.

The shop’s name was channel letter set with LED illumination. Both the letters and banner were then covered in tomato-red vinyl, creating a bright, commanding presence both day and night. Fabrication by Tom Meyer at Accent Signs, Loveland, Colorado.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: The Pines at Southmoor – 2008

Apartment living has been booming in the Fort Collins area since the turn of the 20th century. During 2008,  Monarch Investments acquired two multi-family properties: The Pines at Southmoor, in Greeley, and Ramblewood in Fort Collins. Both apartment communities offer similar amenities, such as bus transportation to local universities and city-wide destinations, as well as swimming pools, weight training facilities, and open areas for socializing.

After presenting several sign design ideas to Monarch, the company decided to use the same format for both apartment sites. They wanted a design that would effectively identify their brand – one that both apartment locations could share in shape, size, base and end-post treatment.  The signs were sandblasted into high-density urethane, featured hand-painted art elements, and triple-coated to withstand Colorado’s weather extremes. Individually hand-carved, gold leaf letters drew attention to each apartment complex name. When lined up back-to-back, each two-sided sign shared a metal finish cap that color-matched its borders and posts.

Both signs are still in use at the Greeley and Fort Collins locations.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: St. Peter’s Fly Shop – 2006

For hundreds of years, the ethereal quality of fly fishing has been admired by many but experienced by few. Recently, the sport has captured the interest of traditional lake and stream fishermen and women, as well as a generation of determined novices. It’s a centuries-old pastime that has become a 21st century passion. Devotees write books, produce blogs and videos that offer fly techniques and encouragement, and, sometimes, they open fine fly fishing shops. Such is the case with St. Peter’s Fly Shop.

In 2006, Paxton Signs had the pleasure of designing and building St. Peter’s two-sided sign for their location near Old Town, Fort Collins. The owners wanted to highlight the quality of their products and services, as well as communicate the artistic merits of the sport. That called for a realistic, hand-carved, hand-painted, greenback cutthroat trout! St. Pete’s already had a well-designed logomark, one that lent style and interest to the sign. Paxton Signs incorporated these elements onto a high-density urethane background that was custom-shaped, then painted in elegant hues of teal. The sign featured St. Peter’s name recessed in gold leaf on a striking black oval. Matching ornate posts finished the design, complementing the sign’s color theme.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: Tricycle Creations

Artists, artisans and art patrons are always a pleasure to work with when designing and building a sign. Tricycle Creations was that kind of experience. Whether whimsical or sophisticated, the gallery offered a variety of mediums from sculpture to paintings to drawings. Their appreciation of creative artistic expression influenced the outcome of our collaboration with them.

Seventeen years ago (2002) the gallery owners came to Paxton Signs for a sign that showcased the quality and scope of their inventory. They chose a hand-crafted, gold-leafed, sandblasted sign – a sign that was as artful as the creations displayed in their gallery. The sign’s deep blue background was enhanced with subtle, raised filigree, and a hand-painted antique tricycle gave the sign a playful cachet. The high-density urethane background panel was custom-cut in an eye-catching shape. The end product was a sign that was unique and original.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: Deer Crest Resort

The north entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park is also the location of Deer Crest Resort. The beautiful Colorado mountain lodge is situated on Fall River Road, just minutes from the world-famous Park.

Deer Crest is a four-season getaway for the discriminating traveler and adventurer, offering suites for all seasons, and is specifically designed for adults. It features a refreshing smoke-free environment. Few Estes Park getaways offer as many amenities as Deer Crest. It simply has to be experienced to be appreciated. Visit their website at:  www.deercrestresort.com

Paxton Signs constructed the two-sided Deer Crest sign in 2007.  The 6′ x 10′ sign features a graduated, recessed background, with elevated art elements and prismatic letters. The deer art elements were hand-carved, hand-painted, and placed on an illustrated mountain scene. The featured letters, “DEER CREST,” were hand-carved and gold-leafed for a long-lasting luster. As with all Paxton signs, the Deer Crest sign was designed to tolerate extreme temperatures with triple-coat, exterior paint, and was engineered to withstand high-wind events.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: North Park Visitor’s Center

The North Park Visitor’s Center sign dates back to the late 1980s. Located near Walden, Colorado, it was one of Paxton Signs first creations and featured the hallmarks of our business: Effective communication art, fine craftsmanship and dependable customer service. The dimensional sign was custom-shaped and sandblasted in high-density urethane, including the large front text panel. We built it to last decades in the harsh North Park climate, triple-coating it with exterior paint, and installing it to withstand high-wind loads and extreme temperatures.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: Abby’s Ark

As its name suggested, Abby’s Ark gift store contained unique gifts of nearly every wholesome sort – a global selection of educational, captivating and entertaining items not found in an increasing number of large “box” stores. Although Abby’s Ark was absorbed by Nature’s Own Science and Nature Store in the early 2000s, its legacy lives on as one of the first and finest curiosity and educational gift stores located in Old Town Fort Collins.

Paxton Signs designed the Ark’s sign by using wordplay: The shape of the sign was an “arc”- simple, appealing and highly visible, and emphasizing the store’s name: Abby’s Ark. The shaped background was cut from high-density urethane and featured hand-carved end pieces that were adorned in variegated copper. The letters were finished in gold leaf. Overall, the metallic finishes highlighted the dark blue background.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: Tapestries by Shanne

Tapestries by Shanne  was one of Paxton Signs’ first dimensional signs. Designed in 1987 and measuring approximately 4′ x 2.5′, the sign was custom-shaped and sandblasted in high density urethane. The background surface was hand-painted in a deep blue, faux finish, with darker shading surrounding the different groupings of cream-white letters. Rust and orange trim grounded the dark blue background, adding a colorful contrast.

The accomplished Shanne Hilleman still designs tapestries, or Soft Media, as she calls her craft. Fiber arts may continue to be her main focus, but, as an accomplished musician, she also teaches piano and pursues other skills and interests such as courtroom steno writing, art education, Spanish and social issues. THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: Antiques by Vintage Clock & Watch

In 1997, antiques were popular, valued and sought after. The  Silent Generation (born between 1925-45) and the Baby Boomers (1945-65) were the demographics that owned and collected antiques. The majority in these age groups began moving into smaller homes, resulting in the selling of their antiques to accommodate downsizing. This has had a snowball effect on the antique market: With the increased supply and less demand, antique prices have plummeted. But even with reduced prices, they have not sold and probably won’t for some time, mostly due to a shift in current interior “open-space” trends, as well as popular contemporary home design in general.

Vintage Clock and Watch Repair included antiques in their business model during the 1990s. Paxton Signs designed and hand-painted the specialty sign that was displayed at the store’s entrance from 1997 to the early 21st century. Since then, VCW moved on to other locations, and, because of the declining market, eliminated antiques from their inventory.

In an interesting twist, the sign shown, left, found a home at a local flea market that specializes in – you guessed it – antiques! Paxton Signs offered to buy it back, but the flea market liked the sign so much, they declined the offer.
