THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: Abby’s Ark

As its name suggested, Abby’s Ark gift store contained unique gifts of nearly every wholesome sort – a global selection of educational, captivating and entertaining items not found in an increasing number of large “box” stores. Although Abby’s Ark was absorbed by Nature’s Own Science and Nature Store in the early 2000s, its legacy lives on as one of the first and finest curiosity and educational gift stores located in Old Town Fort Collins.

Paxton Signs designed the Ark’s sign by using wordplay: The shape of the sign was an “arc”- simple, appealing and highly visible, and emphasizing the store’s name: Abby’s Ark. The shaped background was cut from high-density urethane and featured hand-carved end pieces that were adorned in variegated copper. The letters were finished in gold leaf. Overall, the metallic finishes highlighted the dark blue background.

Paxton Signs’ more than 37 year history includes hundreds of signs. Some are major monument signs, some small business signs. We’ve created ranch signs, lighted signs, signs made from recycled wood, hand-painted signs, carved signs, vehicle and fleet graphics – a continuous variety of communication art, serving Fort Collins and northern Colorado.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: Tapestries by Shanne

Tapestries by Shanne  was one of Paxton Signs’ first dimensional signs. Designed in 1987 and measuring approximately 4′ x 2.5′, the sign was custom-shaped and sandblasted in high density urethane. The background surface was hand-painted in a deep blue, faux finish, with darker shading surrounding the different groupings of cream-white letters. Rust and orange trim grounded the dark blue background, adding a colorful contrast.

The accomplished Shanne Hilleman still designs tapestries, or Soft Media, as she calls her craft. Fiber arts may continue to be her main focus, but, as an accomplished musician, she also teaches piano and pursues other skills and interests such as courtroom steno writing, art education, Spanish and social issues. THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: Antiques by Vintage Clock & Watch

In 1997, antiques were popular, valued and sought after. The  Silent Generation (born between 1925-45) and the Baby Boomers (1945-65) were the demographics that owned and collected antiques. The majority in these age groups began moving into smaller homes, resulting in the selling of their antiques to accommodate downsizing. This has had a snowball effect on the antique market: With the increased supply and less demand, antique prices have plummeted. But even with reduced prices, they have not sold and probably won’t for some time, mostly due to a shift in current interior “open-space” trends, as well as popular contemporary home design in general.

Vintage Clock and Watch Repair included antiques in their business model during the 1990s. Paxton Signs designed and hand-painted the specialty sign that was displayed at the store’s entrance from 1997 to the early 21st century. Since then, VCW moved on to other locations, and, because of the declining market, eliminated antiques from their inventory.

In an interesting twist, the sign shown, left, found a home at a local flea market that specializes in – you guessed it – antiques! Paxton Signs offered to buy it back, but the flea market liked the sign so much, they declined the offer.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: The Inn At City Park

Even though the Inn at City Park is no longer open for guests, as a private residence, it still graces a beautiful tree-lined avenue in Fort Collins.

The rare 1930’s foursquare structure was transformed into an American farmhouse-styled bed and breakfast, located in a serene park-like setting within minutes of historic Old Town Fort Collins, and a short walk to the campus of nationally recognized Colorado State University. Built in 1935 and updated in 2005 – a refurbishment that complemented the structure’s original era – the Inn at City Park offered five elegantly designed guest rooms. Throughout the structure, hardwood floors highlighted the beauty and craftsmanship of a bygone era. Beautiful landscaping and gardens provided a quiet place to get away from it all. The large, wrap-around porch offered views of the city’s historic park and golf course across the avenue – a lovely setting for conversation, refreshment, or contemplation.

In 2005, Paxton Signs designed the Inn’s two-sided sign to reflect the ornate graphics of the early 20th century. Gold leaf letters commanded the attention of passers-by, drawing the eye in to the streetcar graphic (the original streetcar still operates daily during summer months), the address, and finishing with the bed and breakfast tagline. The background panels were shaped from medium-density signboard and painted to correspond with the Inn’s exterior colors. The gold-leafed letters were hand-carved in high-density urethane. Finally, the streetcar was formed from medium-density signboard, then hand-painted.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: Hillcrest Farm

The horse industry impacts the American economy more than motion picture services, railroad transportation, furniture and fixture manufacturing. The industry employs more than 700 thousand people directly – 450 thousand of these positions are full-time equivalent jobs, the rest are part-time and seasonal. Colorado ranks 9th, nationally, in horse ownership, and the majority of those owners live in northeastern Colorado. Hillcrest Farms is one of the nation’s many horse boarding and training centers located in that region, near Fort Collins.

Paxton Signs has been building Hillcrest’s signs since 1999, in addition to lettering their fleet graphics. We designed the Hillcrest identity to reflect the quality service they provide. The dimensional entrance sign measures 3′ x 5′, and is sandblasted into a sturdy sheet of high-density urethane. The various borders, colors and graphic elements add interest. Gold-leaf letters and artistic trim give the sign its strong graphic elegance.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Trophy Mountain Ranch

Picture rolling grasslands that sweep up to a mountain of dark timber, broad vistas that stretch well into Wyoming, and a pervasive quiet that soaks into your soul, and you’d have a good start on visualizing Trophy Mountain Ranch north of Walden, Colorado.  Although world-class elk hunting and trout fishing were the outdoor centerpieces of Trophy Mountain Ranch, it had high-country appeal as a broad-based recreational ranch, including horseback riding, snowmobiling, and ski touring in the winter months.

In 2005, Paxton Signs designed and built the Trophy Mountain Ranch sign with the above characteristics in mind. The 3′ x 10′ sign was carved from a sheet of high-density urethane, painted in a green/black, gradated background, including mountain and forest graphics, then finished with snow white dimensional letters and a bold, decorative dimensional banner.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Featuring Hearthfire at Richards Lake

In 2003, Paxton Signs retro-fitted a newly designed Hearthfire community sign to an existing monument base.  The 4’x6′, two-sided sign was custom-shaped and featured a hand-painted, blue heron illustration, in addition to a gold-leafed, ornamental filigree border. The hand-carved letters were also gold leafed. The finishing touch was to add a thin, turquoise blue trim – just enough color to set off the gold leaf elements and midnight blue background. Sometimes less is more!

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Vivian’s

There was a time in Fort Collins when high-end, European lamps and lampshades were hard to come by. Internet shopping hadn’t yet presented desirable alternatives, leaving most customers to shop for home decor and interior design accessories either through catalogs or at a few large, “big box” department stores. That is, until 2001 when Vivian opened her doors to grateful shoppers. From the simple to the exotic, Vivian’s became the go-to, high-end, lamp, lampshade and home-decor alternative, located in downtown Fort Collins.

Paxton Signs crafted Vivian’s hand-carved, gold-leafed sign to complement the store’s high-end appeal. The letters and border were hand-carved in high-density urethane. The main panel was made from MDO plywood, then finished in a painted, purple faux texture. By combining gold leaf and the deep, purple texture, Paxton Signs produced a sign that reflected Vivian’s elegant cachet.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Deep Blue Massage

Nearly ten years ago, DEEP BLUE Massage opened its doors in Fort Collins, offering beauty and innovative massages for everything from eyelashes to foot therapies. Their expertise soon made DEEP BLUE one of Northern Colorado’s preferred beauty and healing enterprises.

DEEP BLUE offered many services: Innovative massage that focused on individual needs; Specialized therapeutic and deep tissue treatments; Popular favorites, inclulding Couple’s massage, hot stone and pregnancy massage; Halotherapy (salt therapy), Deep tissue laser therapy and Ion cleanse (foot detox). Their mission was to provide therapies that allow the body to devote all of its energies to restoring itself.

Paxton Signs designed the DEEP BLUE logo first, using the serene beauty of the center’s interiors, and their use of natural sounds, as inspirations for a calming visual identity. The 4′ x 5′,  two-sided monument sign face was constructed of white acrylic Plexiglass with translucent vinyl used for letters and graphics. The surrounding blue border was created by using the sign cabinet’s existing 2″ retainer fascia. The existing pillars and pediment beam framed the sign, creating a unique, traditional composition.

THROWBACK THURSDAY… Everyday Joe’s Coffee House – 2005

Over the years, Paxton Signs has worked with many faith-based organizations, helping them create and construct permanent signs for their local churches and gathering places, as well their attendant commercial enterprises. In 2005, Everyday Joe’s Coffee House contracted Paxton Signs to design and construct a storefront sign for their church-related business. The sign, shown below, is a single-faced sign designed by Paxton Signs, and measures 3 1/2′ x 10′.  It is fabricated from 1/2” thick MDO plywood, cut to shape, and painted with a “faux” background to suggest texture. The logo and “COFFEE HOUSE” are cutouts of High Density Urethane. The Everyday Joe’s  logo is rendered in two levels, with “COFFEE HOUSE” on one level. The letters, “COFFEE HOUSE,” are beveled around the entire perimeter of each letter. The remainder copy is rendered in premium quality, self-adhesive vinyl. All painted surfaces are finished with oil enamel or premium latex paints.

As the community outreach of Timberline Old Town in Ft. Collins, CO, Everyday Joe’s Coffee House seeks to benefit and serve their neighborhood. They started by making the best cup of coffee they could for anyone who would come through their doors, and have continued to brew quality coffee everyday since. They proudly use beans roasted by Color Coffee Roasters and Oddly Correct Coffee. The coffee house hosts concerts, community events, and art installations because they “believe in good creativity, good causes, and good work”. Everyday Joe’s is powered by 30+ volunteers who practice what they preach: Love and acceptance. They are a “community space, gathering place, events venue, art gallery, and sanctuary with coffee in their blood and service in their hearts”.
