THROWBACK THURSDAY! Featuring: Twin Moose Yogurt, Breckenridge, Colo – 2012

In most Colorado vacation destinations, sign codes are strictly controlled by the towns and counties that regulate outdoor advertising in their areas. This usually means that storefront signs must reflect a tasteful, subdued appearance that corresponds with the surrounding scenic environment.

At Paxton Signs, we think of our sign designs as “communication art,” in contrast to harsh, overpowering, highway billboards, neon signs, or other aggressive outdoor marketing tools. Although these products have their places in the advertising world, they are prohibited in getaways such as Breckenridge, Frisco, Vail, Aspen, Steamboat or Crested Butte. In fact, the outdoor marketing in these areas is so artistic, one can walk through their respective business districts and enjoy an adventure in “commercial art.”

Twin Moose Yogurt Company of Breckenridge, Colorado, had size and space requirements that limited their sign investment. This was actually good for them because it minimized their per-square-foot cost. The local sign restrictions also assured them that other signs in the immediate area wouldn’t overwhelm theirs, which, in turn, created another issue: Conformity. To set their sign apart from the uniformity of the surrounding signs, Paxton Signs suggested using gold leaf on the store’s hand-carved letters. The way in which gold leaf catches light guaranteed that their sign, literally, would reflect their name to passers-by, an advantage in the local competitive treat market.  The sign’s background was sandblasted in high-density urethane for added dimension. The moose and tree elements were hand-carved in HDU as well, then painted in realistic, natural colors. Needless to say, the yogurt was legendary.

Paxton Signs’ more than 38 year history includes hundreds of signs. Some are major monument signs, some small business signs. We’ve created ranch signs, lighted signs, signs made from recycled wood, hand-painted signs, carved signs, vehicle and fleet graphics – a continuous variety of communication art, serving Fort Collins, northern Colorado, and surrounding mountain communities.
