The Tapestries by Shanne dimensional sign was one of Paxton Signs’ first hand-crafted custom signs. It dates back to the late 1980s, a few years after we opened our sign business in Fort Collins.

First, a brief note about the owner, Shanne Hilleman: she still designs tapestries, or Soft Media, as she calls her craft. Also known as fiber arts, it continues to be her main focus. However, as an accomplished musician, she also teaches piano and pursues other skills and interests. For example, she practices courtroom steno writing, art education, Spanish and social issues. How we made the Tapestries by Shanne dimensional sign

We designed Tapestries by Shanne in 1987. It measured approximately 4′ x 2.5′. We custom-shaped and sandblasted it in high density urethane. Also known as HDU, urethane is a superior substrate that offers many creative options for shapes and finishes. For example, wood grain patterns, as well as mottled and pounded finishes, are just three of the many looks possible. In addition, urethane is more durable and receives paint and faux textures better than wood.

Color, contrast and background interest

For visual emphasis and interest on the Tapestries sign, we hand-painted the background surface in a deep blue faux finish. An even darker shade of deep blue surrounds the different groupings of cream-white letters. Doing this created more contrast with the white lettering. Rust and orange trim grounded the dark blue background, adding a colorful contrast.
