On the road in South Dakota

on the road in South Dakota Brian and Peg photoA recent trip on the road in South Dakota found us in Hill City, the epicenter of the state’s impressive historical and geological attractions. To our surprise, we found a thriving sign venue as well. Turns out, most of the signs were created by signcrafters in Rapid City, less than 30 miles from Hill City. So, as usual, even though we were on a mini-vacay, we found ourselves focused on the city’s excellent sign work. As you can see, the signs were impressive.

After seeing the sights – like touring Mount Rushmore, driving the remarkable Needles Highway and hiking the Cathedral Spires and Black Elk Peak trails – we strolled through Hill City’s business district for an evening meal. Unfortunately, we were unable to get in at Desparados (an hour and a half wait). But, after all that walking and picture-taking, we found a table at the busy Bumpin’ Buffalo. Their deep-fried corn poppers started us off, with a salad and BBQ finish.

A few words about Hill City’s great signage…

Our favorite sign is the Jon Crane Gallery sign (pictured above), reminiscent of Gary Anderson’s fine sign design and craftsmanship. In addition, both of the Buffalo Old Time Photo Co. signs are excellent examples of painted and dimensional applications. For a taste of modern, we admire the Ben West Warrior’s Work and Contemporary Art signs. On our way out of town, we spotted the rafting sign – another winner.
