As avid travelers, skiers and hikers, we love road trips. Fortunately, Colorado offers a tremendous variety of back country skiing terrain, as well as hiking in state and national parks, including national forests and wildernesses. And, mountain ranges galore! So, we were excited for the opportunity to offer our “extra-mile customer sign service” to Ramble Outdoors Camping, located at Colorado’s Great Sand Dunes, at the base of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. In this case, our extra-mile customer sign service would be the delivery of two dozen steel posts that we had already painted, numbered and “rusted”(See photo, below, and previous blog post for details).
The trip would also give us a chance to drive through other Colorado mountain ranges still covered in record-breaking snow pack. Most of Colorado’s towering fourteener peaks are scattered up and down the center of the state. In early spring, these giants really DO look bigger blanketed in winter’s white.
623 extra mile customer service
We made our 623 mile round trip on the last Sunday in April. Our delivery of the two dozen steel posts went smoothly with only one hiccup: locating the staging area where the posts would be installed on each campsite. Because it’s a brand new camping area and still under construction, highway directional signs hadn’t been installed. Consequently, we had to rely on inaccurate Internet maps. Eventually, that search ended in a phone call to the site manager. We didn’t mind any of this extra driving. After all, we were staring at one of Colorado’s most spectacular mountain vistas – the Sangre de Cristos.
The mysterious singing sands
The Great Sand Dunes are 149,000 acres of wind blown sand. The sand comes from both the San Juan mountains and the towering Sangre de Cristos. Over thousands of years, a crucial curve was carved out by geological forces at the base of the Sangres. During that time, it collected the sand we see today. But, not just any sand. It’s just the right size and weight to stick around. It moves constantly, causing the dunes to shrink and grow, some as tall as 755 feet. And, the moving, shifting sands even sing! Bing Crosby was so taken by the phenom that he wrote and sang his 1940 hit, “The Singing Sands of Alamosa” as a love song based on the sounds of the singing dunes. https://www.nps.gov/articles/grsa-singing-sands.htm
