Gordon Creek’s Vinyl Sign

Jul 18, 2024 | Vinyl signs

When cost is a factor, or when a new business is testing the waters for longevity, people often choose vinyl signs instead of pricier sign types. Initially, using vinyl makes business sense when you consider that start-up expenses can reach double or triple the initial expectations. And, they are ready to install, fast! Vinyl signs take a fraction of the time it takes to produce other types of outdoor signage. Gordon Creek’s vinyl sign, pictured, is a fine example of these kinds of considerations. In fact, sometimes simple and inexpensive signs are all that’s needed for start-ups or outdoor/indoor items like directional signs, informational signs, and other incidental signs.

How long does vinyl last?

Usually, a vinyl sign, such as Gordon Creek’s vinyl sign, will look good for up to five years, maybe a little longer depending on its environment. However, when we compare vinyl’s five-year durability with hand-painted durability, hand-painting will last up to ten years, or double the longevity. Further, when we compare vinyl with hand-carved, metal-leafed, sandblasted or dimensional signs, the durability difference can be nearly twenty years!

Here comes the sun… rain, snow and wind

Of course, it’s worth mentioning that any sign’s longevity is greatly influenced by exposure to sun, rain, freezing temps and wind. For example, a sign facing north/northeast can last longer than a south/southwest facing sign. Similarly, a sign that’s exposed to constant rain or snow could eventually warp and peel. Wind has its own kind of damage that not only affects a sign, but its structure as well.

Does vinyl color affect longevity?

So, how about vinyl signs? How does weather affect them? Unfortunately, they’re also susceptible to sun, heat, wind and cold, actually, more so. What’s more, their longevity can even depend on the vinyl color used. For example, any color with red in it – all red shades, browns, and oranges – fade faster than black, blue, green or yellow.

Cost-effective savings

Obviously, sign durability differences are varied but still more significant with vinyl signs. However, as mentioned above, most new business owners who are budget-minded and don’t know how long their business will flourish, will choose the cost-effective vinyl sign, even though it could be less durable. Remember, for lesser signs, such as directional and informational signs, vinyl is often the best choice primarily because the savings are simply worth it.
