Lately, hand-carved signs have been very popular. Whether they’re used as personal or business signs, the requests have increased. Usually, the projects are for more artistic, elegant or personalized signs. For example, the Harrison hand-carved sign (pictured) is a church sign that’s in the process of becoming a treasured item for the St. Spyridon Orthodox Church to which Mr. Harrison has bequeathed the sign. The 14″ x 25″, hand-carved, gold-leafed, mahogany sign is elegant and simple in design. Once the wood stain and gold leaf are applied, the sign will glow with welcoming warmth.
Which woods are best?
Mahogany is a great choice for a hand-carved sign. In addition, black walnut, white walnut (butternut), basswood, cherry and oak, lend themselves beautifully to hand-carving. These woods are also valued for their organic appeal, durability and aesthetic beauty. Truly, nothing carves or looks like solid wood. Worth mentioning, however, is High Density Urethane (HDU). This substrate comes in a close second as far as carving versatility is concerned. But, a finished HDU sign doesn’t have the romantic appeal of authentic wood.
Project specifics
Hand carving is a human endeavor, at least for now. As such, an investment made for the “hand of the artist” cachet is more than it would be for a computer-designed vinyl project, or even a durable hand-painted sign. Carving is tedious. It requires a high degree of concentration and accuracy. In addition, it requires hours to create prismatic effects and other carved nuances.
Prices range from the hundreds of dollars for a small sign, to the thousands for larger, more elaborate designs. Time wise, from start to finish, a hand-carved, gold-leafed sign usually takes from six to eight weeks. This includes, designing the sign, wood selection and prepping, carving, staining and gold-leafing.
Whether it will be displayed indoors or outdoors, a hand-carved, gold-leafed, wood sign will look fantastic and last for decades.
