Greenbriar hand painted signs

greenbriar handpainted signRecently, we had the pleasure of working with a homeowners association that requested an unusual project: signs that were hand-painted,  asymmetrical, weathered, rough hewn, and using recycled, distressed wood. In other words, a brand new sign that looked many, many decades old. And not just one sign – TWO!  We went to work designing and fabricating two Greenbriar hand painted signs.

Swapping ideas and discussing possibilities…

The process began with idea swapping and discussing possibilities. Greenbriar Village representatives were definite about one expectation: That we couldn’t do anything wrong if we designed, built, and distressed the signs as unconventionally as possible. In addition, they loved the idea of using recycled fence pickets. During the process, they showed us a photograph taken on an evening walk in their neighborhood. The photo was of the sun setting behind the Colorado foothills with a neighborhood dog in the lower, left corner. We surprised them by using the sunset photo as a strong, painted graphic, adding interest to the sign design.

Finishing the “unfinished” products…

Finally, we custom-shaped the recycled panels and hand-painted them to appear worn and weathered. The signs’ unconventional shape and exposed nail heads rounded out the finished – “unfinished” – products.  They loved the results. Below are photos of the painting process for the Greenbriar hand-painted signs, starting with the recycled fence picket selection, then implementing weathered and distressed painting techniques.
