THROWBACK THURSDAY Abby’s Ark
This week’s Throwback Thursday, Abby’s Ark sign featured interesting metallic finishes. As its name suggested, Abby’s Ark gift store contained unique gifts. They had a global selection of educational, captivating and entertaining items. Many items were not available in a then increasing number of large “box” stores. Eventually, Abby’s Ark was absorbed by Nature’s Own Science and Nature Store in the early 2000s. However, the Ark’s legacy lives on. It was one of Fort Collins’ first and finest curiosity and educational gift stores. Abby’s Ark was located in Old Town Fort Collins.
How we made this week’s Throwback Thursday Abby’s Ark sign
Paxton Signs designed the Ark’s sign in the 1990s by using wordplay. The shape of the sign was an “arc”- simple, appealing and highly visible. It emphasized the store’s name, Abby’s Ark. We cut the shaped background from high-density urethane. It featured hand-carved end pieces adorned in variegated copper. The letters were in gold leaf. Overall, the metallic finishes highlighted the dark blue background.
