Good Sign Design Starts Here

We’ve all seen poorly designed signs, banners and vehicle wraps. They serve as a reminder that simply having a vinyl cutter doesn’t qualify one as a professional sign maker.

Paxton Signs strives to help our customers put their best foot forward. We believe your success is our success, and we’re here to help. Our 40 years of sign design experience guarantees beautifully designed signs, banners and vehicle graphics. Because, good sign design starts here. We utilize basic “rules” of design to create attractive and effective communication art. Here’s how we do it:

The fundamentals of good design

good design starts here exampleContrast, color and font use are three fundamentally basic and important elements of effective sign design. Because signs and banners are often seen by people driving by, it’s important that they are easy to read at a glance. Specifically, this means that without proper color and contrast and font spacing, signs are difficult to read. They confuse and don’t draw drivers’ attention. Therefore, keeping all sign elements simple, organized, and using contrast, helps your sign stand out. The “contrast” example shows how effective this is.

High-contrast color grabs attention. White on black or any intense color works well to create interest and draw attention.

A good design makes use of both positive and negative space. Positive space includes letters and images. Alternately, negative space includes everything around and in between. Ideally, negative and positive space should be well-balanced. The most common mistake is cramming too much information into the design. Consequently, there is no room for organization.

Font selection can make or break a sign design. We use different fonts that look good together. For example, we use one font for your main message and another for your secondary message.

Kerning – the space between letters – is an important design element. All letters are not the same size. Therefore, they need to be organized and spaced appropriately.

Good sign design makes a difference

Unreadable fonts, poor spacing and poor use of contrast, or white/black balance.

Well-designed signs should have good balance between white space and other sign elements. Overly cluttered signs are difficult to read (see example shown). Too much information causes viewers to miss the message entirely. The poor use of white space and messy grouping of related elements makes this sign difficult to read.

The Milestone Square sign is an example of a well-designed Paxton Sign. It achieves all aspects of good design: Contrast, color, fonts, kerning, and white/black space. Finally, it’s finished off with an overall pleasing shape, interesting art elements, set in a faux stone monument wall.

Simple Design is Better Design

Vehicle lettering is an effective marketing tool. Except when it isn’t.

It’s normal for business owners to expect the absolute most out of their vehicle lettering; the more information, the better, right? Fill every square inch with as much as possible; more bang for the buck, as they say. If only that were true. Although digital wraps have the potential for great marketing appeal, many wrap designers end up doing just the opposite. That is, they cover the vehicle surface with disorganized, unnecessary elements. Literally, they hope to make a complex sales pitch while speeding down the highway. And they fail. The lesson? Simple design is better design.

Why Simple is better

Take a look at the first example of a Paxton Signs lettered vehicle. Notice its clean, direct appeal using only essential and necessary information. It announces Who and What is rolling by with strong, clean, readable graphic elements. POW! All you need to know, at a glance. Now, look at the two wrapped vehicles. Notice how the vans appear cluttered, confusing and ineffective. Where to look first? What are they selling? As you can plainly see, simple, effective graphics are always better.

The really great news is, not only will the Paxton Signs van get noticed – because it’s designed more effectively and efficiently – but the VALUE of the design is greater than those expensive wraps.

Call Paxton Signs for a BETTER VALUE BID on your next vehicle or fleet. We believe simple design is better design. It’s also much more affordable.

Hand-crafted Paxton Signs

hand-crafted paxton signs hearthfire photoPeople like to see the “hand” of the artist at work. Further, the design skills and craftsmanship of a hand-crafted piece give the work its unique cachet. This is the case whether it’s crafted furniture, jewelry, a work of fine art, or a hand-crafted sign. Consequently, as time goes by and reputations grow, the body of work created by any artist in any genre becomes renowned. Similarly, hand-crafted Paxton Signs have grown in popularity and demand.

For more than 39 years, Paxton Signs has created hundreds of beautiful, hand-crafted signs. We like to call our work, Communication Art. From design to construction, we put our decades of experience into each and every project. We use only the best materials, including recycled options when requested. Our paint products are of the highest-quality industry standard. Additionally, we always use THREE coats of paint on every sign. When routing, carving or sandblasting, we utilize artistic techniques that have been practiced for hundreds of years – even thousands of years, when applying gold or metal leaf.

Hand-crafted Paxton Signs communicate more than just your business name. They project pride, creativity, hand-crafted quality.
