Bella Fiore Storefront Sign

bella fiore photoThe Bella Fiore storefront sign was one of Paxton Signs’ most memorable projects. It dates back to the late 1990s. It’s special because of the traditional hand-carved letters and art elements, and also because of the distressed faux background and finishes on the carved elements. The owners wanted “authentic.” In addition, they wanted it to be a lighted sign.

Old World techniques

We enjoyed the project because it presented the opportunity to recreate traditional, hand-carved art not usually found on most contemporary signs. Designing and carving the letters and filigree border elements to correspond with Old World, Italian exteriors was a welcome challenge. It made the effort one of the most rewarding in recent memory.

The production process

First, we hand-carved the sign’s high-profile border into High Density Urethane sections. We then attached the sections to a larger 5′ x 10′ HDU panel. Next, we used traditional tools, techniques and finishes to create the appearance of historic Italian exteriors. Further, to replicate these vintage surfaces, we distressed the unfinished base and carved elements with cracks and blemishes. We did all of this prior to color-staining and applying faux finishes. In addition, we hand-carved the name, “Bella Fiore,” to imitate worn, aged lettering and finished it in the same fashion.
