Lamp Post Lodge dimensional monument sign hand painted Westcliffe COLamp Post Lodge is nestled in the town of Westcliffe in historic Custer County, Colorado. The remote town is home to an abundance of passionate stargazers. Although there are several awe-inspiring, star-studded spots in the area, stargazing at Lamp Post Lodge offers unique “dark-sky” mountain lodging in the heart of the Wet Mountain Valley, at the base of the legendary Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It boasts crisp linens, cozy atmosphere, fresh mountain air, majestic panoramic views, and, of course, all those stars!

The Lamp Post can accommodate individuals or group events. In addition, the entire hotel property can be engaged for large gatherings. It’s a convenient, short walk from Westcliffe’s Main Street. Visit their web site at:

The Lamp Post sign

In 2011, we designed the Lamp Post Lodge sign remotely, via the Internet. We’ve never had the pleasure of personally meeting the owners, Dick and Barb Jones. However, because they were experienced business owners and community leaders, working with them on-line and in phone conversations made our collaboration smooth and successful.

We produced the 2-sided highway sign locally, in our shop. First, we sized standard MDO signboard plywood to fit the space between their existing brick pier structure. Next, we designed the sign to be dimensional. To do this, we elevated the lamp post graphic above the background surface. The dark, midnight blue background highlights the word “Lodge,” hand-lettered in white. Additionally, the midnight blue conjures the area’s famous night skies. The sign’s colors also blend with the brick piers. Last, we double-coated all the surfaces with high-quality, outdoor latex paint to withstand the sign’s exposed, high-plains location.
