We designed and built Sullivan’s Sports Tavern dimensional sign in the mid-1990s. At the time, it was one of the first sports bars in Fort Collins. Serving food and drink, it was located in the adjacent Campus West business district, just west of the Colorado State University campus. The tavern eventually closed in the early 2000s, due to the area’s building expansion.
Sullivan’s Sports Tavern Details
The complex dimensional sign combined hand-carved letters and gold-leafed banner elements. First, we formed the sign by cutting and shaping layers of MDO sign board and high-density urethane. Next, we pinstriped the base layer, behind the interior oval and name. Then, after we hand-carved the letters and banner art elements, we assembled all of the dimensions, creating a total of four layers. After painting and gold-leafing the designated surfaces, we sealed everything with an oil enamel paint finish.
Even though the sign hung on a west facing exterior wall that received intense sun, wind and moisture, the sign kept its brilliance for the duration of its use. What’s more, Sullivan’s used this sign design as their logo for advertising and marketing purposes.
